What is TPM?

If you are running a manufacturing plant and are looking to improve the performance and efficiency of your plant TPM (which is an abbreviation for Total Productive Maintenance) is probably something you want to know more about. In this article we will tell you what is is and how your company can benefit from implementing it.

TPM is a preventive maintenance approach to how you handle your equipment. The goal of this approach is to prevent defects, breakdowns and stops. Also this a way to prevent employee accidents which is ofcourse the most important thing of all. This principle is based on 8 pillars which are the following:

  1. Development
  2. Autonomy of maintenance
  3. Improvement of new equipment
  4. Education
  5. Process worth management
  6. Administrative work
  7. Quality maintenance
  8. Healthy workspace

As you probably can imagine these 8 pillars need a lot of work to achieve a solid TPM approach.

To help you effectively measure your TPM efforts OEE is generally used. OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a metric tot track whether or not your TPM approach leads to perfect production.

OEE is often automated by usage of very helpfull platforms, like the one from https://www.4industry.io/. By using these kind of platforms it is way more easy to get insight which you wouldn’t get if you would track OEE manually.

Hopefully we were able to give you some useful insights on how you can use a TPM approach to your advantage!
